Somisa World Series 2015... SBN @ BEL - Game 1

For the World Series, I'm going go into greater detail than the earlier series providing commentary and boxscores for each game. SBN was the clear class of the league this year with 104 wins and they cruised to the NL title. They are the defending champs and have won 3 times in the past 5 years. SBN manager, Tom Benson, is a very experienced Strat manager and he has done a consistently great job of trading and managing his teams to a high level of success. His team features two great pitchers in Jose Fernandez and Felix Hernandez plus Francisco Liriano who is a LHP pitcher and BEL has struggled mightily with lefties this season. Unfortunately for SBN, Fernandez is limited to one start in this series and Hernandez had a very good but not outstanding 2014 season and it was believed Wainwright was his equal (or maybe slightly better.) SBN's bullpen is lead by Aaron Sanchez who is a very good reliever but probably not a match for BEL's top 3 guys.

SBN's lineup strength comes from Matt Holliday, Ozuna, Rizzo, Tulowitski and Reddick which is a nice mix of LH and RH hitters so a lineup can be built that to match up with most pitchers. In his earlier series, Salador Perez and Rickie Weeks had critical hits to win ballgames too. Also, the presence of Perez who is a strong throwing catcher will severely limit BEL's running game featuring Reyes who stole 37 bases during the Somisa season.

One more thing to note... since both teams were extended to seven games in the LCS, their top starter will only be able to pitch in 2 games, not 3. This may be critical but it means other starters will have to be used at critical points.

The series opens at BEL's ballpark, PNC for the first two games.

Game 1

The pitching matchups are Liriano vs. Fiers.

BEL continued its season long struggle vs. LHP. Liriano held BEL scoreless for 4 innings and 5 relievers limited BEL to 1 run. BEL left 12 runners on base so it wasn't a total shutdown. It became kind of apparent that SBN was going to use most of its bullpen for single batter matchups and then turn the ball over to Sanchez. This will impact how some moves were made later in the series. McCutchen continued to leadoff and had one hit but also 3 walks so he was more effective than most of the earlier series.

Fiers pitched well allowing only 3 hits and one walk but was charged with 3 runs. BEL's bullpen however gave up one run each by four relievers. Tulo and Reddick had the key hits with Tulo hitting a 2 out 3 Run HR in the top of the 6th. Reddick and Arenado doubled in runs and in the end it was a cakewalk for SBN with a 7-1 victory.

The South Bend Fighting Irish registered 4 runs in the 8th inning and had very
little trouble at PNC Park downing the Bellingham Bozos.  The score was 7 to
1.

Joakim Soria(3-0) won the game with a masterful relief performance.  No one
got on base in his 1 inning.  The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th
inning.

Aaron Sanchez was credited with his 4th save.  The losing pitcher was Mike
Fiers(2-1).  He surrendered just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3 innings.
