All playoff rounds are seven games with a day off at the end of the season and a day off after the seventh game is played. If the series doesn't require seven games to conclude, the winning team can consider those as rest days. A pitcher needs to have pitched at least 200 innings in MLB to qualify to start on three days rest. For BEL, that means Adam Wainwright can start games 1, 4 and 7 and Phil Hughes can start Games 2 and 6. BEL plans to fill in with Fister and Fiers for the additional starts.
Wynooski does not appear to be as strong as some of the other teams and finishing first in the AL puts BEL up against this team while two stronger teams, BIG and VER have to fight it out for the other side of the AL draw.
BEL takes the first 2; Wainwright gives up a single to the second batter of the game and then no more hits for a 4-0 shutout; Game two was a see saw affair; WYN came back 2x from deficits despite having 3 runners thrown out at home including two in one inning. WYN used 8 pitchers and BEL 7 but it was a walk to Markakis followed by a Lemahieu triple and a single by Beltre that were the final runs in the 6th as BEL's bullpen gave up one hit in the final 5 innings for a 5-3 win.
BEL traveled to WYN and took a fast lead in Game 3 with a Markakis 2 run HR and a McCutchen 3 run HR making it a bit of a runaway. Fiers went 8 inning of 3 hit ball and BEL won 8-0; Game 4 was different; WYN scratched out a few hits and runs off Wainwright while BEL couldn't solve Rasmus; in the end it was BEL's bullpen that failed and WYN's that stood up for a 4-2 victory. BEL leads 3 games to one with one more Game @ WYN before coming home for the final two.
Game 5 had more surprises as Hughes who got knocked around in Game 2 had a strong perfromance and BEL found some power as Adams hits a solo and then Markakis smacked a 2 run shot for an early 3-0 lead; consecutive doubles added another one and BEL's 3rd HR (by Vogt) pretty much sealed the deal; but wait, Hughes was pitching a no hitter...until single in the 7th gets WYN their only hit as BEL closes out WYN with a 7-0 win.
This series went pretty well with little drama and mostly dominant pitching. Beltre and Markakis were the hitting stars and McCutchen who lead off most of the series had an awful average (.167) but a high OBP.
